Innovation Metrics for Management

2012 Survey

Thank you for participating in the Conference Board of Canada survey of innovation metrics and management practices in Canadian industry.

The Centre for Business Innovation (CBI) is a five-year initiative to help bring about major improvements in firm-level business innovation in Canada. We define "business innovation" as a process through which economic and social value is extracted from knowledge through the generation, development, and implementation of ideas to produce new or improved strategies, capabilities, products, services, or processes. This definition covers both radical and incremental innovation.

The survey will generate new quantitative and qualitative measures of Canada’s business innovation efforts. These new metrics will enable us to comprehensively assess innovation performance. They will also provide firms with a clear basis for evaluating their own innovation-related activities and better tools to manage their innovation activities.

The CBI’s mission is to learn why Canada is not a leader in business innovation, to develop business strategies for firms and capital markets that will improve firm-level innovation, to generate evidence and track Canada’s performance, and to formulate public policies that will successfully stimulate business innovation. Positive results will help Canada become a world leader in this area, thereby boosting its competitiveness.

Findings from this survey will assist Canadian businesses to understand the potential impacts of innovative activities in all pertinent areas: from strategic business models to competitive management of their portfolios of products/services, market territories, and classes of customers; from key corporate processes to organization culture, human resources and business dynamics, and hence the optimal handling of innovative resources. The study will provide organizations with the tools for deciding on innovation priorities, for measuring innovation performance, and for deciding on corrective actions.
